United Nations human rights experts have sharply criticized India’s military actions inside Pakistan in May saying New Delhi’s use of force violated Pakistan’s sovereignty and breached international law. According to a recent UN report Indian strikes on May 7 targeted civilian areas damaged mosques and killed and wounded non combatants raising serious concerns about respect for the UN Charter’s core principles.
The experts noted that India has not presented credible evidence linking Pakistan to the Pahalgam attack that triggered the escalation undermining New Delhi’s justification for the offensive. The report stresses there is no internationally recognized right to carry out unilateral military action under the pretext of counterterrorism.
The conflict unfolded as part of a four day exchange of hostilities between the nuclear armed neighbours with Pakistan later conducting counter strikes under “Operation Bunyan um Marsoos.” The clashes only subsided after both sides agreed to a US brokered ceasefire on May 10.
In addition to condemning the use of force the UN experts highlighted concerns over India’s recent stance on the Indus Waters Treaty warning that threats or disruption to water flows could affect basic human rights including access to water food health and livelihoods for millions of Pakistanis. They urged that water must not be used as leverage in political disputes.
The report further requested clarity from New Delhi on its evidence and intentions toward a peaceful resolution of the long standing Kashmir dispute a request to which India has so far provided no official response.
