Despite key macroeconomic indicators like GDP per capita showing India ahead of Pakistan a new Gallup Pakistan big data analysis reveals that Pakistani households outperform their Indian counterparts in ownership of many everyday assets highlighting different consumption patterns and living standards on the ground. The report finds that 57.6 % of Pakistani households own a washing machine nearly three times India’s roughly 20 % rate and Pakistan also leads in refrigerator ownership showing a stronger prevalence of labor-saving appliances even amid economic pressures. While television ownership still favors India at around 66 % versus Pakistan’s roughly 50 % that gap has been narrowing in recent years signaling rising access to entertainment tech for Pakistani families. In transport motorcycle ownership is very similar between both nations underscoring shared mobility needs and car ownership remains low in both at roughly 8 % in India and 6.4 % in Pakistan challenging assumptions that broader economic size always translates directly into household asset accumulation. The findings suggest that GDP per capita doesn’t fully mirror household welfare or consumption patterns on the ground with Pakistan showing stronger penetration in some durable goods despite lagging in overall income levels and broader development indices.
