15 months after being driven from power by the people’s uprising, Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has finally admitted that mistakes were certainly made by security forces during last year’s violent crackdown.
Her statement made from self-imposed exile, is being viewed not as an act of honesty, but as a desperate attempt to rewrite history & justify the brutality unleashed on the people of Bangladesh.
Hasina fled Dhaka on 5th August 2025, after weeks of nationwide protests led by students, workers & ordinary citizens demanding justice, accountability & the end of her authoritarian rule.
Instead of listening to her people, Hasina unleashed state violence, ordering her forces to open fire on unarmed demonstrators.
Thousands were detained, tortured or disappeared under her regime’s command, as the government tried to crush a movement born from years of corruption, political suppression & economic mismanagement.
Her latest remarks claiming that the government acted in good faith & that decisions were proportionate are being condemned as a direct insult to the victims & families of those who suffered.
The bloodshed that occurred under her watch cannot be dismissed as mere mistakes, they were deliberate acts of repression against citizens demanding freedom & justice.
Hasina’s comments on the upcoming February 2026 elections, where she cast doubt on the process & dismissed its legitimacy, further expose her unwillingness to accept Bangladesh’s new democratic direction.
Her claim that the elections would not be valid because her party, the Awami League, remains banned, reflects her refusal to recognise the will of the people who rose to end her autocratic rule.
