Miss England contestant Milia Magee has withdrawn from the international beauty pageant in protest against what she called the mistreatment & humiliation of women in India, exposing once again the contradiction between New Delhi’s global claims of women empowerment & the disturbing reality on the ground.
Her decision has triggered outrage in global media circles, raising serious questions about the treatment of foreign participants & the culture of exploitation thriving under the Modi regime’s watch.
The 24 year old from Cornwall, England, said she faced unethical, inhumane & degrading treatment during the competition in India. Speaking to British media, Milia revealed that during a publicity event in Hyderabad, contestants were treated like performing monkeys & forced to wear ball gowns all day, even during breakfast.
She added that participants were compelled to sit with businessmen who had funded the show, describing the situation as unbelievable & humiliating.
“I felt like I was being displayed as some sort of entertainment piece. I didn’t come here to be anyone’s amusement,” Milia said, adding that when she tried to speak about her social work and humanitarian efforts, the men showed no interest, engaging instead in shallow small talk.
She also shared that organisers labelled her boring, & one woman even clapped in her face to demand attention, an act Milia described as deeply insulting & demeaning. She said it felt like they were being mocked, not treated as adults but as children put on show.
Human rights advocates have pointed out that incidents like this reflect a broader pattern of gender discrimination, objectification & moral decay under Modi’s government, where women continue to face harassment & violence despite claims of reform & progress.
The controversy has once again brought international focus to India’s crumbling image on women’s safety, a problem the Modi administration has long attempted to downplay through glossy campaigns & public relations exercises.
