Investors looking toward SpaceX’s long awaited IPO may be gearing up for one of the biggest market events in history but analysts warn they should also be ready for a wild ride.
SpaceX the company that revolutionized space travel with reusable rockets and created the global Starlink satellite broadband network is now preparing for a public listing that could raise more than 25 billion dollars and value the company at over 1 trillion dollars. If successful it would rank among the largest IPOs ever.
But there’s a catch and his name is Elon Musk.
For years Musk has made it clear that his ultimate mission is sending humans to Mars. That ambition analysts say should temper investor expectations that a publicly traded SpaceX will narrow its focus to predictable revenue rich businesses like expanding Starlink launching direct to cell service or building space based data centers.
And investors have seen this movie before.
Musk’s other company Tesla has often forced shareholders to balance its core car business with his big bets on artificial intelligence and robotics. Musk has even said Tesla is not a car company it’s a platform for AI and automation. Those comments have sometimes rattled the market.
Still excitement around a SpaceX IPO remains high. Starlink alone is already generating billions in annual revenue and continues to expand globally. But analysts like Caleb Henry of Quilty Analytics warn that anyone buying into SpaceX must accept the company’s DNA: heavy spending risky innovation and long development timelines.
“SpaceX has always been an R&D heavy company,” he says. “Investors can sour if they don’t feel rewarded. The investors of tomorrow will have to accept that.”
In other words SpaceX may offer enormous opportunity but not without turbulence. For shareholders the company’s path to the stars could also mean embracing the uncertainty that comes with Elon Musk’s boldest ambitions.*
