Two men are dead and two more are in a life-threatening condition after a house fire in south London.

The fire broke out at a home in Sanderstead Road, south Croydon, just before 23:00 GMT on Friday.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said "two men, no further details, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene".

Officers are trying to trace the men's families and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and police.

A fifth man was treated at hospital and has since been discharged.

An LFB spokesperson said: "Most of the ground floor of a two-storey end-of-terrace house was damaged by fire.

"The brigade was called at 22:39 and the fire was brought under control by 00:16. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Croydon, Purley, Woodside, Norbury and Wallington stations attended."
