Australian authorities are investigating the country’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly 30 years which left 16 people dead including a rabbi a Holocaust survivor and a 10 year old girl during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach Sydney. Police say the attack was carried out by a father and son Sajid and Naveed Akram who are believed to have been radicalized by Daesh ideology.
Authorities in the Philippines confirmed the pair spent almost the entire month of November there entering on November 1 as Indian Nationals with Davao listed as their final destination and leaving on November 28 to return to Sydney. Early reports suggest the younger Akram’s vehicle contained improvised explosive devices and ISIS flags. Videos have also emerged of him preaching extremist views in suburban Sydney.
Police said the father 50 year old Sajid Akram was killed at the scene by officers while his 24 year old son Naveed remains in critical condition in hospital. Investigators are working to understand how the duo went down the path of terrorism.
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett stressed the attack was inspired by a terrorist organization not religion and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the radicalization link to Daesh.
The Philippines’ Mindanao region where the pair spent November has a history of insurgency including attacks by the Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups though the military has not confirmed whether the Akrams received any formal militant training. Authorities continue to piece together the full scope of the plot and any wider network behind the attack.
