The United Arab Emirates has launched a $1.5 million research initiative to enhance rainfall and address the country’s chronic water scarcity part of the UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science with grants awarded to top scientists from the United States Australia and Germany selected from 140 proposals submitted by researchers from 48 countries; each team will receive up to $1.5 million over three years to develop innovative environmentally sustainable cloud‑seeding techniques including the use of artificial intelligence new seeding materials and advanced land‑based methods aimed at improving the efficiency of artificial rainfall supporting agriculture and strengthening water security in one of the world’s driest regions. The UAE which relies heavily on desalinated water and has limited natural rainfall already conducts hundreds of cloud‑seeding flights each year and officials say this new research push could make rainfall enhancement more predictable efficient and environmentally safe while fostering international collaboration in atmospheric science providing valuable data for climate adaptation and ensuring the nation can meet future water demand as population growth and climate challenges continue to strain resources in the Gulf region.
