These claims were later contradicted by verified information from international media. Australian authorities identified the suspects as father and son Sajid and Naveed Akram. Sajid 50 originally comes from Hyderabad in India’s southern state of Telangana and moved to Australia in 1998. His son 24 year old Naveed was born in Australia and survived police gunfire during the incident.
Reports confirmed that both suspects have strong ties to Australia undermining early social media and media narratives that tried to implicate Pakistan. The incident highlights the dangers of spreading misinformation before facts are confirmed. Indian television anchor Arnab Goswami and other social media users were among those who initially claimed a Pakistani link demonstrating how quickly false narratives can gain traction in moments of national tragedy.
