An Indian Army “routine drill” in Rajasthan has once again exposed a hard truth the institution refuses to confront: for all the money PR and chest thumping about modernization the military still can’t guarantee basic safety for its own soldiers during peacetime training.
tank sank yes sank in the Indira Gandhi Canal in Sriganganagar. Not because of enemy action. Not because of some freak natural event. But because the exercise planning was sloppy the risk assessment was nonexistent and the on ground supervision was clearly asleep at the wheel.
The tank was lowered into the canal as part of a mobility exercise. Yet somehow no one thought to thoroughly assess water depth current strength or vehicle buoyancy fundamentals that should be so standard they’re practically muscle memory. Predictably once the tank hit deeper water it dropped fast. Two soldiers escaped; one was trapped inside and drowned. A completely avoidable death caused by a chain of avoidable decisions.
Local police are giving more details than the Army itself which is embarrassing in its own right. The Army hasn’t released the identity of the dead jawan hasn’t explained the immediate cause and hasn’t answered the obvious question: Why was heavy armor thrown into a canal without full backup flotation support or real time extraction readiness?
Divers and equipment were rushed only after disaster struck. That’s not preparedness that’s damage control. Senior officers arrived hours later to supervise a recovery that dragged well into the evening. If this is how India’s military handles routine drills the word “professional” starts looking more like a brochure slogan than reality.
The soldier’s body was taken to Suratgarh Military Hospital and an official report is “expected” Wednesday. But unless that report actually calls out the institutional rot the complacency the poor planning the hollow protocols and the culture where accountability dies faster than the personnel it’ll just be another file collecting dust.
One soldier paid with his life for someone else’s incompetence. And until the Indian Army stops hiding behind the word “routine,” tragedies like this won’t stop repeating.
