The US has announced a major reduction in tariffs on Swiss goods slashing them from a prohibitive 39% to 15% under a newly agreed framework trade deal.

This move comes as Swiss & US officials including Trade Representative Jamieson Greer & Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin finalised negotiations after intensive discussions in Washington.

The agreement while still awaiting full details is seen as a decisive step to restore parity between Swiss exports & those from the European Union which have enjoyed a 15% tariff on US shipments.

Swiss business leaders have welcomed the deal as a significant relief for industries that had faced substantial economic strain including machinery precision instruments watchmaking food pharmaceuticals gold smelting & railway equipment.

Richemont Chair Johann Rupert who met President Donald Trump as part of a delegation of Swiss executives described the initial tariffs as the result of a misunderstanding which has now been effectively resolved.

Swiss exports to the US had fallen sharply over the last quarter with machine tool shipments dropping by 43% underlining the urgency of the trade agreement.

The deal also emphasises closer industrial cooperation with Switzerland committing to shift certain manufacturing operations including pharmaceuticals & heavy industrial equipment to the US.

Swiss companies have hailed this as a strategic move to stabilise the economy prevent further job losses and ensure competitive parity with EU counterparts in the American market.

Experts suggest that the lower tariff could boost Swiss economic growth to over 1% in 2026 compared with a previously forecasted 0.9%.

US officials described the negotiations as very positive with the framework not only reducing the immediate financial burden on Swiss exporters but also fostering closer ties between the two nations industrial sectors.

Swiss authorities confirmed that further details would be disclosed once all elements of the agreement are finalised signalling a new phase of bilateral trade cooperation designed to balance market access & economic growth.

This agreement marks a significant improvement in US-Swiss trade relations offering Swiss companies a fairer position in the US market while supporting American manufacturing through strategic relocation of certain production facilities.

Both governments have highlighted the broader economic & diplomatic benefits of the deal positioning it as a model for mutually beneficial industrial collaboration in the global trade landscape.
