President Donald Trump has ordered the US Justice Department to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s connections to major banks & prominent Democratic figures including former President Bill Clinton in a move critics argue is designed to shift attention away from Trump’s own mentions in newly released documents.
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that the department will investigate Epstein’s network with urgency & integrity appointing US Attorney Jay Clayton to lead the effort.
Trump has repeatedly stressed that Epstein’s ties are a Democrat problem urging the public to focus on former presidents & influential Democratic donors rather than on himself.
The timing of this announcement is significant. Just days earlier the US House Oversight Committee released more than 20,000 pages of Epstein-related emails.
These documents mention Trump in over 1,600 email threads although none of the emails were sent or received by him.
Democrats immediately accused the President of using the investigation to hide behind former presidents & other political figures whose names also appear in the files.
Clinton frequently singled out by Trump has strongly denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.
JPMorgan Chase another target of Trump’s demands expressed regret over any past association with Epstein but insisted they played no part in his illegal activities.
Meanwhile Congress is preparing for a crucial vote on whether to force the Justice Department to release its full Epstein files.
The vote was triggered after Democrat Adelita Grijalva became the 218th signature needed for a discharge petition. Four Republicans joined Democrats in the push for transparency reflecting a rare bipartisan moment.
The new documents include correspondence involving former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers & Epstein’s long time associate Ghislaine Maxwell now serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking.
Some messages reference Trump while others mention multiple high profile political & financial figures fuelling a political battle over who is trying to protect whom.
Traditionally sitting presidents avoid publicly directing investigations into former presidents. Trump’s aggressive move stands out & analysts say it shows a deliberate strategy point to former presidents & Democratic elites as a shield against questions about his own presence in the Epstein archive.
Survivors of Epstein’s abuse including the family of Virginia Giuffre continue to call for the full release of all Epstein files insisting that transparency must come before political calculation.
