NATO has reaffirmed its steadfast support for Ukraine, committing to remain engaged until a lasting peace agreement is achieved.
Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chair of NATO’s military committee, described the conflict as largely stalemated from an operational perspective & emphasised the urgent need for dialogue to prevent further loss of life.
Adm Dragone noted that Russia’s full scale invasion in 2022, instead of achieving its objectives, led to the strategic setback of Finland & Sweden joining NATO.
Despite slow advances on the battlefield, he asserted that Russia will not succeed in installing a friendly or puppet government in Ukraine, contrasting it with Belarus.
Highlighting the European commitment, Admiral Dragone said NATO members are prepared to continue supporting Ukraine’s defence, recognising the invasion as a wake up call that has prompted countries to take greater responsibility for their own security.
In line with this, NATO members agreed in June to gradually increase defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.
Regarding Russia’s announcements of long range nuclear capable weapons, Admiral Dragone downplayed the threat, emphasising that NATO is a defensive nuclear alliance focused on protecting its 32 member states & over 1 billion people.
On potential future threats, he suggested that any aggression would likely target the Baltic states Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania & reaffirmed that NATO’s Article 5 would ensure collective defence, including support from the US.
Air defence has emerged as NATO’s top priority, especially following drone incursions by Russia into Poland & Romania.
Admiral Dragone explained that measures, such as the establishment of the Eastern Sentry initiative, are underway to integrate & enhance existing air defence systems along the alliance’s eastern flank.
This includes rapid deployment of available systems & upgrades to respond effectively to airspace violations.
Despite some signs of hesitancy from certain members like Slovakia & Hungary, Admiral Dragone underscored NATO’s unity & cohesion as its central strength.
He concluded on an optimistic note, asserting that the alliance remains stronger than its adversaries & will continue its support for Ukraine until peace is achieved.
