BJP MP Medha Kulkarni is facing widespread outrage after she led a group of Hindutva activists to Pune’s historic Shaniwarwada & purified a spot with cow urine where Muslims had earlier offered namaz.
The act, carried out on Diwali eve, has sparked sharp criticism from opposition leaders & social activists who are demanding her immediate resignation for promoting religious hatred.
Kulkarni, defending her actions, claimed, If Muslims are offering namaz inside a historical place like Shaniwarwada, then Hindus should also be allowed to perform aarti in mosques. Her remarks have only intensified the backlash, with critics calling them divisive & unbecoming of a public representative.
Shaniwarwada, built in 1732 by Peshwa Bajirao, holds deep historical & cultural significance as the seat of Maratha power.
Social activist Manav Kamble mocked the MP’s logic, saying, “If she’s so eager to purify, perhaps she should start with the entire fort after all, Bajirao’s beloved Mastani, a Muslim woman, lived there too.”
The controversy has reignited concerns about growing intolerance and the politicization of religion in public spaces, especially under the guise of protecting heritage.
