Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked US President Donald Trump for his Diwali wishes but avoided addressing any of the pressing issues that define India’s strained economic position.
His carefully worded one line message on X “Thank you, President Trump, for your phone call & warm Diwali greetings” was meant to sound cordial, yet it exposed how Modi continues to dodge questions about tariffs, trade losses & Trump’s recent claim that India would stop purchasing Russian oil.
While Washington has tightened tariff measures & raised concerns over India’s trade practices, New Delhi’s silence has added to market uncertainty.
Indian exporters are struggling & the middle class faces higher import costs, but Modi has chosen to keep quiet on whether his government plans to seek tariff relief or renegotiate trade terms.
At the same time, Trump’s statement earlier this month that Modi personally assured him India would curb Russian oil imports remains unaddressed by the Prime Minister’s Office.
This lack of clarification not only leaves energy analysts guessing about India’s next steps but also raises questions about the credibility of India’s stated position on strategic autonomy.
Critics argue that this pattern of selective communication has become Modi’s political habit, celebrating symbolic exchanges while avoiding accountability on economic policy.
A simple thank-you post might please Trump, but it does little for Indian citizens facing rising prices & shrinking export margins. Modi’s silence, once seen as strategic restraint, now reads more like political avoidance in a time when transparency is needed most.
