US President Donald Trump has revealed that he personally intervened to stop Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from escalating a war with Pakistan earlier this year, a conflict that began with India’s failed attempt to provoke Islamabad but ended with Modi pleading for a ceasefire once Pakistan struck back with full force.
Speaking at a Diwali celebration in the White House, Trump said he had a great conversation with Modi following the May clashes between the 2 nuclear-armed neighbours.
“We talked about trade, we talked about a lot of things, but mostly about having no wars with Pakistan. I think the fact that trade was involved, I was able to talk about that & we have no war between Pakistan & India. That was a very, very good thing,” Trump said.
The crisis began after India launched Operation Sindoor inside Pakistani territory, causing civilian casualties & international concern.
Pakistan responded decisively with Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, targeting Indian military sites with precision strikes & shooting down multiple fighter jets, including Rafales.
The swift & effective retaliation not only dismantled India’s offensive momentum but also exposed the vulnerability of Modi’s military posturing.
Facing heavy losses & growing internal panic, Modi reportedly reached out through diplomatic backchannels, seeking US mediation for an immediate ceasefire.
Trump leveraged trade pressure on New Delhi to bring both sides to the table, effectively forcing Modi to back down. We have no war with Pakistan & India that was a very good thing, Trump repeated, underscoring his administration’s role in averting a full scale conflict.
Pakistan later confirmed shooting down 6 Indian aircraft, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during his UN General Assembly address, said the number reached 7. India, cornered by global scrutiny, admitted to some losses but tried to conceal the extent of the damage.
