Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless efforts to promote democratic rights & achieve a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Machado as a symbol of civilian courage and a unifying figure in a previously fragmented opposition.
Chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes highlighted her decades-long work advocating judicial independence, human rights & free elections, despite threats to her life and forced periods in hiding.
Machado also played a critical role in the 2024 presidential elections, training hundreds of thousands of volunteers as election observers to ensure transparency, even under a repressive regime.
Frydnes noted that Venezuela has transformed from a relatively democratic state into an authoritarian regime, with widespread poverty, political repression & a humanitarian crisis forcing nearly 8 million citizens to leave the country.
He emphasised that Machado’s peaceful & democratic activist offers hope for a future where citizens rights are respected & voices are heard.
