Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged developed countries to honour their climate-finance commitments, saying Pakistan continues to face severe consequences from a climate crisis it has contributed little to creating.

Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Shehbaz said Pakistan contributes less than one percent of global emissions, yet repeatedly bears the damaging effects of climate change.

He highlighted the country’s repeated exposure to floods and other extreme weather events, which have caused deaths, displacement, destruction of homes and livelihoods, and major economic losses.

The prime minister called for faster international funding for countries facing climate-related loss and damage. He also urged stronger support for adaptation and resilience, particularly for vulnerable developing nations.

Shehbaz argued that countries most affected by climate change need practical financial assistance to prepare for future disasters and recover from the damage already suffered.

Pakistan has repeatedly called for greater international cooperation on climate resilience, particularly after devastating floods and other extreme weather disasters.

At the UN, Shehbaz stressed that climate action must be matched by responsibility and resources, warning that vulnerable countries cannot face the growing costs of climate change alone.
