Iran has released what it says is wreckage from a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone, after claiming its air-defence forces shot down the unmanned aircraft during the latest escalation with Washington.
Iranian officials say the drone was intercepted over central Iran using a newly developed air-defence system. Footage released by Iranian media shows debris being displayed in the city of Khomein.
Tehran says the incident demonstrates the capabilities of its air-defence network as fighting with the United States intensifies around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
However, the U.S. government has not confirmed that the wreckage belongs to an MQ-9 Reaper and has not acknowledged losing the specific drone, leaving Iran’s claim unverified.
The MQ-9 Reaper is a long-endurance unmanned aircraft widely used for surveillance and precision strikes, making any confirmed loss potentially significant for U.S. operations.
The reported shootdown comes amid renewed U.S.-Iran fighting following American strikes on Iranian military targets and Iranian retaliatory attacks against U.S. positions across the region.
