Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed his call for NATO membership, arguing that Ukraine could bring one of Europe’s strongest and most battle-hardened militaries into the alliance. As the war with Russia continues, Zelenskyy says Ukraine’s years of combat experience have created capabilities that could strengthen NATO’s collective defence and improve security across Europe.
Kyiv has long sought a clear path toward joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, viewing membership as a long-term security guarantee against further Russian aggression. Zelenskyy argues that Ukraine’s military has gained extensive experience operating under the most demanding battlefield conditions, including modern drone warfare, air defence, artillery operations and large-scale combat.
For Ukraine, NATO membership is not only about military cooperation but also about securing the country’s future after the war. Kyiv wants stronger guarantees that Russia cannot launch another major offensive once active fighting eventually ends. Zelenskyy has therefore continued pressing NATO members to move beyond political support and establish a more defined route toward membership.
However, Ukraine’s accession remains a complicated and sensitive issue. NATO members must reach consensus, while the ongoing war creates major strategic and political challenges. Some allies remain cautious about steps that could directly increase confrontation with Moscow.
