A Ukrainian drone strike has killed at least 13 people, including a child, and injured dozens more in Nizhnekamsk, in Russia's Tatarstan region, according to Russian authorities.
Local officials say 39 people were initially reported injured, while the attack caused damage across both civilian and industrial areas.
The strike also targeted the TANECO oil refinery, a major Russian energy facility operated by Tatneft. Smoke and fires were reported around the refinery following the attack.
Nizhnekamsk is located deep inside Russia, hundreds of kilometers from Ukraine's border, highlighting Kyiv's growing ability to conduct long-range drone operations against targets far from the front lines.
The attack also damaged a nearby hostel, where several of those killed were reportedly staying. Seven of the victims were identified as Uzbek citizens, according to Uzbekistan's consulate in Kazan.
Ukraine's military said it targeted the TANECO refinery as part of its campaign against Russia's oil and energy infrastructure, aiming to disrupt facilities that help support Moscow's war effort.
Russian authorities condemned the attack and launched an investigation, while emergency crews continued assessing the damage and treating the wounded.
The strike marks another escalation in Ukraine's deep-strike campaign, as both sides continue targeting infrastructure far beyond the immediate battlefield.
