NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has defended alliance unity, saying European allies broadly supported the recent US military operation against Iran and describing disagreements with some European governments as isolated cases. Speaking ahead of the NATO summit, Rutte stressed that the alliance remains united on key security priorities.
Rutte said NATO members continue to stand together in addressing regional instability and protecting collective security, despite differences in political messaging over the conflict. He emphasized that the alliance's core commitment to mutual defense remains unchanged.
The NATO chief also highlighted record increases in European defense spending, saying member states are investing more in military capabilities and strengthening the alliance's readiness to respond to emerging threats across Europe and beyond.
His remarks come as NATO leaders prepare for high-level discussions on the Middle East, Russia, and long-term security challenges. Rutte said the alliance remains stronger and more cohesive than ever, with unity continuing to be its greatest strategic advantage.
