High-level delegations from the United States and Iran have arrived in Islamabad, Pakistan, for urgent peace talks aimed at ending weeks of conflict and stabilizing a fragile ceasefire, but the negotiations are already facing serious uncertainty over key disputes including Lebanon and sanctions relief. The U.S. team, led by Vice President JD Vance, is pushing for a broader settlement that also covers Iran’s nuclear program and regional militant activity, while Iran is insisting that any agreement must first include a ceasefire in Lebanon and the unfreezing of its assets.
Despite Pakistan hosting the talks as a neutral facilitator, deep mistrust remains between both sides, with fighting still reported in parts of Lebanon and sharp differences over the scope of any ceasefire deal, especially around the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Officials warn that while the talks represent the most significant diplomatic contact in years, major gaps remain and a breakthrough is far from guaranteed as global attention remains fixed on whether diplomacy can prevent further escalation.
