India has cleared nearly $25 billion in new military procurement, marking one of the largest single‑year defence spending pushes in the country’s history. The Defence Acquisition Council approved the purchases, which include transport aircraft, remotely piloted strike aircraft, and Russian-made S‑400 long-range air‑defence missile systems, aimed at modernizing India’s armed forces and boosting strategic deterrence. Officials say the acquisitions will strengthen capabilities across the army, air force, and coast guard, improving readiness along key borders and maritime zones. In addition to aircraft and missile systems, the package covers coastal surveillance platforms, armour‑piercing ammunition, and aerial reconnaissance technology, reflecting India’s multi-layered approach to national security. Analysts note that the deal with Russia continues India’s long-standing defence partnership while diversifying equipment sources to reduce dependency on any single supplier. The move also comes amid regional tensions, particularly along the northern and western borders, and as New Delhi seeks to secure its strategic interests in the Indian Ocean. Defence experts suggest these acquisitions send a clear message of preparedness, technological modernization, and a commitment to maintaining a robust military posture capable of responding quickly to emerging threats. The programme is expected to unfold over the next several years, with operational integration and training forming key components to ensure that the new platforms are fully mission-ready.
