Israeli ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan has vowed to wear a yellow star until the UN Security Council condemns "the atrocities of Hamas" and demands the "immediate release" of hostages.
The UN Security Council has failed to pass a series of resolutions addressing the situation in Israel and Gaza because of a lack of consensus.
Jews were required to wear the yellow Star of David under Nazi rule. It was a way to identify them publicly - and those found without one were fined, jailed or sometimes even killed.
Today, pinning on the star is seen as a way of evoking the Holocaust.
