Pakistan has taken a stern position at the United Nations Security Council warning that the recent joint U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran risk igniting a broader regional conflagration with far reaching consequences for peace and security across the Middle East and beyond. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad told the 15 member council that Islamabad is ‘deeply alarmed’ by the rising violence and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint. He said the strikes which occurred amid ongoing diplomatic efforts appear to violate international law and threaten the territorial integrity of nations throughout the region.
In his address the Pakistani envoy also condemned retaliatory Iranian strikes following the initial offensive noting they have affected countries including Saudi Arabia Bahrain Jordan Kuwait Qatar and the United Arab Emirates further underscoring the risk of the crisis spiralling out of control. Ambassador Ahmad stressed that all UN member states must uphold their obligations under the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law calling for an immediate focus on peaceful and diplomatic solutions rather than continued military escalation.
Pakistan’s warning comes as the UN Security Council met in emergency session at the request of several member states including France, China and Russia to discuss the rapidly evolving conflict. UN Secretary General António Guterres also spoke to the council condemning the use of force by all sides and emphasizing that the current hostilities threaten international peace and security. Guterres warned that if the fighting is not halted the risk of wider regional war with grave humanitarian consequences grows with each passing hour.
The Pakistani delegation reiterated Islamabad’s call for restraint de escalation and a return to diplomacy arguing that there is no viable alternative to negotiations to resolve the dispute. Amid mounting global calls for calm and diplomatic engagement Pakistan’s warning highlights the deep concern shared by many nations that continued military action could trigger a conflict engulfing the broader Middle East and destabilizing international peace.
