One of Mexico’s most notorious drug lords Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes known as “El Mencho,” has been killed in a Mexican military raid in an operation backed by U.S intelligence support targeting the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Military forces engaged cartel fighters in Tapalpa Jalisco and El Mencho was wounded in the clash and died while being flown to Mexico City the defence ministry said.
The U.S. Joint Interagency Task Force Counter Cartel is reported to have provided critical intelligence that helped Mexican special forces locate and strike the CJNG leader a key figure responsible for trafficking fentanyl and other narcotics into the United States.
However within hours of the announcement retaliatory violence erupted across multiple states. Cartel gunmen blockaded highways with burning vehicles set businesses alight and forced local authorities to advise residents and tourists to stay indoors amid chaos in cities including Puerto Vallarta.
Several major airlines including Air Canada United Airlines and Aero Mexico suspended flights to affected areas as plumes of smoke and scenes of unrest forced travel disruptions while some state governments cancelled in‑person school classes and issued safety warnings for civilians.
The killing of El Mencho is being described as one of the highest‑profile blows against organized crime in recent Mexican history but experts warn the power vacuum could trigger further violence as CJNG factions compete for control. Authorities are also keeping a close watch on whether the cartel’s fractured leadership will fuel prolonged conflict in the coming weeks.
