India and Brazil Sign Major Mining Pact to Boost Trade and Resource Supply

India and Brazil have signed a major cooperation pact on mining and minerals in a move aimed at deepening economic ties and meeting India’s growing demand for raw materials like iron ore as its steel industry expands.

The agreement was formalized during a state visit to New Delhi by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva where he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for wide ranging talks on trade technology and strategic partnership.

Under the pact both countries will work to attract investment in mineral exploration mining infrastructure and related industries improving India’s access to the critical resources it needs for industrial growth.

Modi and Lula also set an ambitious target to expand bilateral trade from around $15 billion today to more than $20 billion within the next five years underscoring a shared commitment to boost economic cooperation across sectors beyond raw materials.

The partnership will extend into areas such as technology digital infrastructure artificial intelligence and semiconductors reflecting a broader strategic alignment between the two major democracies of the Global South.

Brazil is one of the world’s top producers of iron ore and holds large reserves of other critical minerals making it a key supplier for India’s manufacturing and infrastructure ambitions as both nations navigate global competition for resources.

The move also highlights a growing desire in both capitals to strengthen South South cooperation reduce dependence on traditional markets and build resilient supply chains for the future.
