U.S. President Donald Trump says he will play an indirect role in the upcoming nuclear negotiations with Iran as high‑stakes talks are set to resume in Geneva on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One Trump described these sessions as “very important” and suggested that Tehran may now be more willing to strike a deal partly because of the consequences it faced last summer when U.S. forces bombed Iranian nuclear facilities to curb Tehran’s nuclear capabilities.
Tensions in the Middle East remain elevated. The United States has deployed a second aircraft carrier to the region as a precaution while Iranian forces have held military drills near the Strait of Hormuz a critical global oil passageway.
A key sticking point remains Iran’s uranium enrichment program. Washington continues to demand that Tehran curb enrichment activities which the U.S. says could pave the way for nuclear weapons a claim Tehran denies insisting its program is peaceful.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has met with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency ahead of the talks and says Tehran is seeking a fair and equitable deal even as it rejects any notion of submission under pressure.
Analysts say this round of talks could shape the future of U.S.–Iran relations. While Trump seeks diplomatic progress both sides are preparing for alternative scenarios if a breakthrough isn’t reached.
