Tarique Rahman has been sworn in as Prime Minister of Bangladesh marking a decisive political shift after his party secured a sweeping parliamentary victory.
The leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won a commanding two-thirds majority returning the BNP to power after nearly two decades in opposition. His rise follows the dramatic 2024 uprising that forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office and reshaped the country’s political landscape.
An interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus oversaw the transition period leading up to the national vote.
Rahman now faces immediate economic and diplomatic tests. Bangladesh is working to restore political stability rebuild investor confidence and strengthen key export industries particularly the garment sector which plays a central role in the country’s economy and global supply chains.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the national parliament complex in Dhaka attended by senior political leaders diplomats and foreign representatives including delegates from regional powers.
In his first remarks after taking office Rahman called for calm and national unity urging supporters to maintain peace and warning that disorder would not be tolerated as his government begins its new term.
