Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to urgently address the security situation in Islamabad and ensure effective law and order in the federal capital. The move comes amid intensifying concerns over public safety following two major suicide attacks in recent weeks including a February 6 blast at an imambargah mosque that killed 36 people and injured more than 150 and a November explosion near the G 11 court that claimed 12 lives.
During a detailed briefing Naqvi updated the prime minister on the overall security landscape of the country as well as the current arrangements in Islamabad prompting Shehbaz to instruct him to tackle the challenges in an effective and efficient manner. Officials said the aim is to strengthen protective measures across the city particularly in sensitive areas such as the Diplomatic Enclave Red Zone and high traffic public locations.
The directive follows a high level review of the nation’s law and order situation attended by senior government figures including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar underscoring the federal government’s focus on security amid political and social tensions.
Separately Naqvi is expected to undertake an official visit to Sri Lanka soon where he will convey a special message from the prime minister to Sri Lankan leadership reflecting ongoing diplomatic efforts alongside domestic priorities.
Islamabad’s police leadership has also been directed to review and enhance security protocols with efforts to digitalize surveillance reinforce checkpoints and mobilize additional resources to ensure the capital remains secure. Authorities emphasize that these measures are part of a broader push to restore public confidence and prevent further attacks.
