Pakistan's Federal Planning Development and Reform Minister Ahsan Iqbal has departed for Dhaka to represent Shehbaz Sharif at the oath‑taking ceremony of Bangladesh’s newly elected Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The ceremony is scheduled for February 17 following a landslide victory by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in last week’s general election.
Iqbal’s attendance comes as Prime Minister Sharif is unable to attend due to prior foreign engagements. During his visit the planning minister is expected to hold meetings with senior Bangladeshi officials aimed at deepening bilateral ties and exploring cooperation in economic political and trade sectors. Officials say Pakistan’s representation underscores its support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and ongoing regional diplomacy.
Bangladesh’s election results gave the BNP a decisive majority paving the way for Rahman to assume office and form the next government. Invitations have been extended to heads of state and representatives from across South Asia and the Muslim world including Pakistan India China Saudi Arabia Turkey and Malaysia reflecting Dhaka’s efforts to foster strong diplomatic engagement at the ceremony.
