The Pentagon is threatening to cut off its relationship with artificial intelligence firm Anthropic after months of disagreement over how the U.S. military should be allowed to use advanced AI tools officials and industry sources say.
Defense Department leaders want top AI companies including Anthropic OpenAI Google and xAI to let the military deploy their systems for “all lawful purposes” such as weapons development intelligence collection and battlefield operations. But Anthropic has refused to remove certain safeguards it says are necessary to prevent misuse especially around fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance.
The Pentagon’s frustration has grown after months of negotiations and officials are now considering severing ties entirely if the company doesn’t agree to broader access terms. An Anthropic spokesperson says discussions with the government have so far focused only on questions of usage policies and not specific operational deployment.
The dispute reflects a broader clash over AI ethics and military needs with the Pentagon pushing for fewer restrictions while Anthropic insists on limits aligned with its safety principles. The outcome could reshape how commercial AI technology is integrated into national defence systems in the years ahead.
