U.S. President Donald Trump has openly suggested that a change of government in Iran ‘would be the best thing that could happen’ as tensions with Tehran rise over its nuclear program and regional activity. Speaking after a visit with U.S. troops at Fort Bragg Trump said frustration with decades of stalled talks has shaped his hardline stance even as Washington continues indirect negotiations with Iranian officials in Geneva mediated by Oman.
At the same time the Pentagon has ordered a second aircraft carrier the nuclear‑powered USS Gerald R. Ford to the Middle East to join the USS Abraham Lincoln and other naval assets boosting American military presence in the region. Trump said the additional firepower is being deployed ‘in case we don’t make a deal’ and signalled readiness for possible action if diplomacy fails underscoring an effort to put ‘tremendous power’ in place to deter threats.
U.S. officials say any negotiated agreement with Iran must go beyond curbing Tehran’s nuclear enrichment and also address its ballistic missiles and support for armed groups across the region demands Tehran has resisted. Trump declined to name specific alternatives for Iran’s leadership but said ‘there are people’ who could take over if the current regime falls. Iran has warned of retaliation and tensions remain high as diplomatic and military pressure converge.
