The footage recorded after the Netherlands beat Namibia on February 10 appears to show staff at a Thums Up kiosk collecting leftover soda from used paper cups and pouring it back into an original bottle during waste segregation. The visuals spread rapidly online triggering outrage and accusations that drinks were being recycled for resale.
Let’s be clear at a world tournament where fans are charged premium prices for basic refreshments even the appearance of recycled beverages is unacceptable.
Delhi & District Cricket Association secretary Ashok Sharma has denied any wrongdoing saying the liquid was transferred only for waste management purposes under recycling protocols not for resale. Officials insist there is no evidence that contaminated drinks were sold again.
But this explanation hasn’t silenced public anger.
Because this isn’t just about what happened it’s about what it looks like. And what it looks like is careless unhygienic and completely tone deaf at an event under global scrutiny.
India is hosting the world. Stadium vendors should be operating under the highest possible food safety standards not creating viral moments that damage credibility.
