Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to
meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington this Wednesday just days
after indirect nuclear talks between the United States and Iran in Muscat Oman.
The meeting moved up from an earlier scheduled date will focus on ongoing
negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear program and regional activities.
Netanyahu’s office says any future talks with Iran must
include limits on its ballistic missile arsenal and an end to support for
allied militant groups across the Middle East a stance that reflects
Jerusalem’s deep concerns over Iran’s expanding military reach. Tehran however has
insisted on its “right to enrich uranium” and has not agreed to discuss its
missile capabilities in the current round of diplomacy.
This will be the seventh meeting between Netanyahu and Trump
since the U.S. president returned to office underscoring the priority both
leaders place on managing the complex U.S. Israel Iran relationship. The talks
come amid heightened regional tension following a U.S. Israeli campaign last
year against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and subsequent Iranian retaliation raising
fears of broader conflict if diplomacy stalls.
With world powers watching closely the upcoming summit in
Washington aims to solidify a coordinated strategy on Iran’s nuclear ambitions missile
programs and support for proxy groups a diplomatic push intended to balance
pressure with negotiation even as Tehran continues to maintain a firm stance on
its sovereign rights.
