The United Kingdom has launched a landmark National Cancer Plan designed to transform how cancer patients are supported across the country offering tailored care for every individual from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. The government says the initiative will address not just clinical needs but the wider impact of cancer on patients’ lives including mental health employment and rehabilitation support.
Under the plan each person diagnosed with cancer will receive a Personalized Cancer Plan developed with their care team to match treatments and support to their specific medical and practical needs. The government also plans to link patients to cancer charities and support services through the NHS app making it easier to book screening view records and get help quickly.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting himself a cancer survivor said this is the most ambitious cancer strategy in a generation aimed at improving survival outcomes and quality of life. Officials also intend to roll out national lung cancer screening by 2030 end the so‑called postcode lottery in care quality and expand access to diagnostics and specialist services across the country.
The government’s plan includes historic investment in technology and early diagnosis with expanded use of robot‑assisted surgery digital imaging and community diagnostic centers open evenings and weekends. The ambition is that by 2035 three out of four people diagnosed with cancer will be cancer‑free or living well five years after diagnosis.
