The Indian opposition has blasted the Modi-led BJP government following the announcement of a major US‑India trade deal by former US President Donald Trump.
Opposition leaders particularly from the Indian National Congress have demanded full transparency calling on the government to present the agreement in Parliament and explain its terms to the public.
Critics argue that the deal which reportedly cuts tariffs on Indian goods while opening Indian markets to American products could hurt local industries farmers and traders. They warn that key sectors may face disadvantages if the government has conceded too much without proper consultation.
Some opposition voices have also raised concerns about India’s strategic independence especially over claims that the country may halt Russian oil imports and increase reliance on the United States. They say this could affect national priorities and energy security.
The Modi government however has defended the agreement describing it as a step toward stronger economic cooperation greater market access for Indian products and potential job creation.
With the official text yet to be tabled in Parliament opposition parties have pledged to challenge the government and seek detailed explanations on how the pact will impact India’s economy farmers and strategic interests.
