U.S President Donald Trump has warned Britain against deepening business ties with China calling such engagement “very dangerous,” even as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed progress during his historic visit to Beijing.
Starmer the first British premier to visit China in eight years held three‑hour talks with President Xi Jinping aimed at resetting relations and boosting trade investment and market access. The British leader praised new deals including visa‑free travel for short‑term UK visitors and lower tariffs on key exports as evidence of “real progress” in bilateral ties.
But in Washington Trump publicly cautioned London about moving too close to Beijing saying it was risky for Britain to pursue economic engagement with a rival global power a stance he has also applied to Canada’s recent outreach to China.
Starmer defended his approach by emphasizing that the UK can maintain its “very close” relationship with the United States while pursuing new opportunities in China’s vast market and that strengthening ties with Beijing does not mean abandoning traditional alliances.
The UK’s push for broader cooperation with China comes against the backdrop of intensifying global competition and geopolitical tension as Western nations weigh economic interests against security concerns. Starmer’s visit reflects a strategic effort to balance economic growth with diplomatic caution even as allies like the U.S. urge restraint.
