Iran has executed two men it says were linked to the Islamic
State militant group for their involvement in a deadly bus bombing in 2023 that
targeted a group of pilgrims traveling from Tehran to the western province of
Ilam near the Iraq border. The attack carried out with a planted explosive
device killed a toddler and injured several others drawing widespread
condemnation and highlighting ongoing security concerns in areas bordering Iraq
where Sunni extremist groups have occasionally carried out attacks. According
to Iran’s judiciary and Mizan news agency the two men were identified as
Islamic State‑linked operatives responsible for planning and
executing the bombing and their execution was carried out in accordance with
Iranian law part of Tehran’s broader
efforts to combat militant networks and assert authority against what it calls
terrorist activities. Officials described the move as a warning to other
extremists operating inside or near Iran emphasizing the government’s determination to punish perpetrators of violence and deter
future attacks. Human rights groups however have long criticized Iran for its
frequent use of capital punishment especially in cases involving alleged
militants citing concerns about due process access to legal representation and
transparency in trials. The executions come amid heightened regional tensions
and ongoing concerns over extremist groups along the Iran-Iraq border reflecting
Tehran’s continued struggle to secure its territory while addressing internal
and cross-border security threats.
