Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok is being barred from generating or editing undressing and sexually explicit images of real people following a mounting international backlash and legal pressure over the misuse of its image‑generation features with platform X announcing new technological measures that geoblock users from creating images of individuals in bikinis underwear or similar attire in jurisdictions where such actions are illegal and restricting image editing to paid subscribers in a bid to increase accountability; the move comes after widespread criticism and investigations including a probe by the California Attorney General over Grok’s so‑called “Spicy Mode,” which allowed the creation and spread of non‑consensual sexualized deepfake images of women and children leading some countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia to block access entirely and regulators in the UK and EU to consider legal actions while X and xAI insist the restrictions apply to all users and aim to curb abuse even as broader scrutiny grows over AI’s role in facilitating harmful content online.
