Pakistan has set an ambitious target to generate 60 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 signaling a major push toward clean and sustainable energy. Officials say the goal reflects the country’s commitment to tackling climate change while enhancing energy security and resilience.
The Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam highlighted Pakistan’s progress during the 16th International Renewable Energy Agency Assembly in Abu Dhabi pointing to rapid growth in solar and wind power across the country. Currently Pakistan is expected to reach around 12 gigawatts of off grid solar and over 6 gigawatts of net metered solar capacity by the end of next year. Last year renewable energy already accounted for 53 percent of total electricity generation showing strong momentum toward the 2030 goal.
Authorities stress that expanding renewables will not only reduce carbon emissions but also improve power reliability in areas affected by extreme weather. Distributed solar kits have helped restore electricity and livelihoods in many communities demonstrating the tangible benefits of clean energy. The government is also seeking international support including financing and technology transfer to accelerate Pakistan’s transition to a low carbon energy future.
Achieving the 60 percent target will require sustained investment in solar wind and other clean technologies but Pakistan’s recent achievements suggest the country is on a promising path toward a greener more sustainable energy landscape by the end of the decade.
