The International Cricket Council has reportedly turned down Bangladesh’s request to move its T20 World Cup matches out of India according to media reports.
Bangladesh had asked the ICC to relocate its group stage fixtures which are scheduled to be played in India citing security and safety concerns for players and officials. The request came amid rising tensions between the two neighboring countries fueled by recent cricket related disputes.
Sources say the matter was discussed during a virtual meeting between the ICC and the Bangladesh Cricket Board. During the talks the ICC reportedly made it clear that the existing schedule would remain unchanged and that Bangladesh would be expected to travel to India to play its matches as planned.
Reports also suggested that the ICC warned Bangladesh it could risk forfeiting points if it refused to play in India. However the Bangladesh Cricket Board has denied receiving any formal ultimatum and said it has not been officially informed of such consequences.
The issue has gained attention following recent controversies involving Bangladeshi players in regional leagues which have added strain to cricketing relations in the region.
The ICC has not yet released a detailed public statement on the matter while Bangladesh officials say discussions are still ongoing.
The T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin next year with matches co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh is set to face several teams during the group stage with fixtures currently assigned to Indian venues.
