Pakistan has seen a significant drop in terrorist attacks following the closure of its border with Afghanistan. According to a new security report incidents fell by nearly 17 percent in December after a 9 percent decline in November signaling a positive shift in the country’s security landscape.
The border closure implemented in mid‑October came after repeated cross‑border attacks and clashes with militants. Pakistani security forces also conducted precision operations inside Afghanistan targeting extremist groups aiming to disrupt networks responsible for terrorism along the frontier.
This decline in attacks has been accompanied by a reduction in fatalities. Civilian deaths linked to violence fell by around 4 percent while security personnel fatalities dropped by 19 percent in the final two months of the year. Authorities say these trends reflect improved border security and operational vigilance.
Analysts caution however that 2025 remained one of Pakistan’s most violent years in recent memory with overall violence elevated due to instability in Afghanistan and a resurgence of militant activity since the Taliban’s return to power.
Officials stress that continued monitoring and regional cooperation will be key to sustaining these gains as Pakistan enters 2026 aiming to maintain peace and prevent a resurgence of extremist activity along its borders.
