The year began with the ruling government and Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf locked in confrontation. Opposition leaders rejected dialogue over stalled demands particularly regarding judicial commissions investigating the May 9 riots signaling months of tension and public demonstrations.
In July an Anti-Terrorism Court sentenced senior PTI leaders to 10 year terms in riot related cases. The verdicts were condemned by the party as politically motivated triggering further uncertainty. Several assembly seats were vacated leading to by elections later in the year. Meanwhile the Tehreek e Labbaik Pakistan party staged violent marches in Islamabad in October clashing with police while PTI’s street mobilization focused largely on the ongoing imprisonment of its founder Imran Khan.

The 27th Constitutional Amendment introduced the position of Chief of Defence Forces and established a Federal Constitutional Court a move criticized by the opposition as altering the constitutional balance. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa leadership changes saw Sohail Afridi replace Ali Amin Gandapur as chief minister keeping PTI influence alive despite political setbacks.
