Leaders emphasized that Israel’s decision undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity warning that it could set a dangerous precedent for other separatist movements in the region. They called on the international community to reject this recognition and reaffirm support for Somalia’s unity.
Diplomatic sources say the OIC and its member states are considering coordinated measures including political and legal actions at the United Nations to counter the recognition. Somaliland which declared independence in 1991 following the collapse of Somalia’s central government has sought international recognition for decades but no major country had formally recognized it until Israel’s recent move. The OIC and allied countries stress that any unilateral recognition of Somaliland without Somalia’s consent is unacceptable and could have far reaching consequences.
