A bomb blast has torn through a mosque in northeastern Nigeria killing at least seven people and injuring dozens more police say.
The explosion struck during evening prayers in the Gamboru market area of Maiduguri the capital of Borno state. Worshippers were inside the mosque when the blast ripped through the building triggering panic and chaos.
Police say at least 35 people were wounded and rushed to nearby hospitals. Emergency services and security forces quickly sealed off the area while bomb disposal teams searched for any additional devices.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine who carried out the bombing and how it was executed.
Nigeria’s Borno state has been at the center of a long running insurgency involving armed groups but Maiduguri itself has not experienced a major attack since 2021. The incident has raised concerns about a possible resurgence of violence in the region.
Officials have increased security patrols across the city and urged residents to remain vigilant as investigations continue.
The attack has drawn condemnation from local leaders who described it as a brutal assault on civilians and a place of worship.
