Pakistan's Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 17 years in prison in the high profile Toshakhana-II corruption case a special court in Rawalpindi ruled on Saturday.
The verdict was delivered by Special Judge Shahrukh Arjumand at Adiala Jail where Khan is already incarcerated. Both received 10 years under criminal breach of trust charges and seven years under the Prevention of Corruption Act totaling 17 years each. The court also imposed fines exceeding 16 million rupees per person.
The case revolves around allegations that the couple failed to properly declare and deposit valuable state gifts including a Bulgari jewellery set received during a 2021 official visit selling them at undervalued rates and causing loss to the national exchequer. Prosecutors argued the gifts were wrongly appraised and not placed into the state’s official Toshakhana store as required by law.
Imran Khan’s legal team has already announced plans to appeal the verdict raising questions about the trial and sentencing. This comes as Khan is already serving sentences in other corruption cases. Supporters describe the trial as politically motivated while authorities say it demonstrates accountability and adherence to the rule of law.
The Toshakhana-II sentencing is expected to have significant political repercussions across Pakistan with reactions and protests anticipated from both critics and supporters in the coming days.
