Violence has erupted across Bangladesh after the death of prominent youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi sparking widespread protests and unrest in the capital Dhaka and beyond.
Hadi 32 was a key figure in last year’s pro‑democracy uprising that helped end the autocratic rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and was preparing to run for parliament in February’s national election when he was shot by masked assailants on December 12. He was flown to a hospital in Singapore for treatment but tragically succumbed to his injuries this week.
Thousands of protesters poured into the streets of Dhaka demanding justice and the arrest of those responsible for his assassination. Demonstrations quickly turned violent as mobs set fire to major newspaper offices including The Daily Star and Prothom Alo trapping journalists inside and forcing evacuations.
Public anger has also been directed at political symbols with some demonstrators targeting the residence of former government officials and surrounding the Indian deputy ambassador’s home reflecting deep anti‑India sentiment amid fears that foreign influence played a role in the crisis.
Bangladesh’s interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has condemned the attack and declared a manhunt for the suspects offering rewards for information leading to their arrest. Authorities have deployed security forces across cities to restore order and a day of national mourning has been announced.
As the country edges closer to elections Hadi’s death has underscored rising political tensions and the potential for further instability with citizens demanding accountability justice and a peaceful path forward for Bangladesh’s democratic future.
