UN General Assembly has adopted a Pakistan backed resolution reaffirming the right of peoples to self determination, especially those living under foreign, colonial, or alien occupation. The text titled ‘Universal Realization of the Right of Peoples to Self‑Determination’ was adopted by consensus, showing broad international support.
The resolution, co‑sponsored by 65 countries from all regions, was recommended by the UNGA’s Third Committee, which addresses social, humanitarian, and cultural issues. Pakistan has been presenting this resolution annually since 1981 to keep global focus on the people struggling for their fundamental rights.
The text draws explicit attention to the ongoing struggles in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Palestine, reaffirming the inalienable right of these peoples to determine their own future with freedom and dignity in line with the UN Charter and past UN resolutions.
Importantly, the resolution calls on countries engaged in foreign military intervention and occupation to cease such actions immediately. It also declares firm UNGA opposition to acts of aggression and occupation that suppress human rights and deny people their right to self‑determination.
The General Assembly also expressed deep concern over the plight of millions of refugees and displaced persons, reaffirming their right to return home voluntarily, safely, and with dignity. Additionally, the text urges the UN Human Rights Council to pay special attention to violations of human rights resulting from occupation and aggression.
For many observers, the adoption of this resolution sends a strong message of international solidarity with peoples seeking freedom from oppression, as well as a reminder of the UN’s commitment to uphold core principles of justice and human rights around the world.
